Leadership in Action: Insights from CAAA President Scott Ford

In a recent interview for the California Applicants Association monthly newsletter, ACAAAmplishments (Sept. 2024), Scott Ford, a seasoned lawyer and current president of the California Applicants’ Attorneys Association, shared his approach to leadership, the upcoming winter convention, and his commitment to workers’ rights. His insights offer a glimpse into the principles that guide his work and the passion that drives his advocacy.

What is your approach to leadership as president of CAAA?

When asked about his leadership approach, Scott emphasized the importance of leading by example. “Don’t ask anybody to do anything you wouldn’t do yourself,” he said. This philosophy is not only central to his role as president but also reflects how he runs his practice. He and his business partner, Cheryl, often put in more hours than anyone else in the firm, demonstrating their dedication and commitment to their team and clients. “At the end of the day, we want to take responsibility for the final product,” he added.

What are you most excited about for winter convention?

As he prepares for his first convention as president, Scott expressed excitement about the event’s return to Las Vegas. He highlighted the value of the educational content provided at the conventions, noting that staying informed about the law is essential for effective practice. “It’s almost legal malpractice not to be a CAAA member and to go to conventions because you learn so much about the law that it’s the only way to stay on top of it,” he said emphasizing how crucial continuous learning is for attorneys.

What advice can you give fellow emerging leaders within CAAA, or people that want to get more involved?

For those looking to get more involved with CAAA, Scott’s advice is straightforward: the more you invest in the organization, the better lawyer you become. Participation in the executive board and various committees offers invaluable learning opportunities, from understanding regulations and amicus work to managing large-scale events and budgets. “You also become a better business person,” he noted, as involvement in such activities expands one’s professional skill set.

What inspired you to start teaching comprehensive workers’ compensation classes to unions?

Scott’s passion for injured workers extends beyond his practice. He teaches comprehensive workers’ compensation classes to union members, a role he finds deeply fulfilling. His background as a union-side labor attorney informs his teaching, as he helps union members understand and navigate the workers’ comp system.

Why is it crucial for union leaders and union representatives to have a deep understanding of workers’ comp laws?

According to Scott, it is crucial for union leaders and representatives to have a deep understanding of workers’ compensation laws. “No workers’ compensation claim is worth losing your job over,” he emphasized. Educating union members ensures they can make informed decisions and avoid jeopardizing their employment. His classes, whether comprehensive 16-hour courses taught at L.A. Trade-Technical College or shorter, focused sessions, empower union members to navigate the system effectively and advocate for their rights.

Can you tell me something about your practice that people may not know?

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Scott is committed to giving back to the community. His office regularly organizes food distributions, partnering with local organizations to support families in need. “We always try and promote that to injured workers because injured workers, a lot of times, are suffering,” he explained. This initiative reflects his broader commitment to supporting those facing financial hardship due to workplace injuries.

What makes CAAA special?

A member since 1994, Scott’s dedication is unwavering. His connection to CAAA runs deep, with family roots tracing back to one of the organization’s original founders, his stepfather, Abe Levy. As president, Scott sees his role not only as a significant time commitment but also as a chance to give back to an organization that has profoundly influenced his professional journey. “CAAA is like a family,” he remarked, emphasizing the deep respect and strong relationships among members. This sense of camaraderie and mutual support is a unique aspect of CAAA that he deeply values.
